Depression and failing college courses?

I am going to fail 2 of classes. I havent been to either class or done the work in 3 weeks. I have just been really depressed. They are my earliest classes, and its been a struggle for me to get out of bed in the morning. I really have to talk myself into getting up at all, then when I am finally at school I feel so horrible, that I cant be normal and sociable like everyone else.





I hate PR/journalism...it just sucks...I only tried it out as a major b/c I get so much pressure from people telling me that I am a great writer but I hate journalism and english classes....they bore me to tears, the papers suck, but I did enjoy the reading.





Now that I will probably fail these two courses, what can I do? It'll look so bad on my transcripts...Idk, what to do about this depression, my life is a mess, nothing, and I mean nothing in my life is organized from my room, to my back pack, even my thoughts...





I have spoken w/ a counselor before (useless) Ive taken meds too idk what else to do

This is a tough scenario, I'll tell you that.


I went through a very similar one last year (I'ma sophomore). It just seems like there's almost very little motivation sometimes, to do work...idk.


Do you have anyone there who you feel you would be able to confide in? College is SUCH a weird place, but there's usually at least one other peson who is willing and able to listen and understand, and can be a good friend in this sort of situation.


My suggestion is to get involved. Get as involved as you can in any sort of small community at your school. You like to write, how about the school paper? Or a lit mag? I've also found volunteering to be very rewarding. It's the GREATEST feeling, knowing that you are able to help other people who are often in a worse situation than you are in.

Reply:your first step is to go to another counselor or psychologist for a couple of sessions to talk about your depressed mood. Then, You need to go to the mental health professional again to ask for a medical withdraw. Just like you would have to withdraw from a semester if you had a major physical accident, you can also medically withdraw for psychological reasons like depression. There will be a special for to fill out. You may need to get a copy and bring it to the counselor or psychologist if they don't already have them on hand.


You probably aren't doing well in the classes because you just don't like the material and you don't want to major in pr/journalism. This happens to college students all the time. However, to prevent getting bad grades on your transcript, i highly advise that you either withdraw from those 2 classes on your own, or go to a mental health professional to get a total withdraw from the entire semester. You may feel like you wasted the entire semester, but you will regret it a lot less than if you get 2 F's (or E's, whatever grading system you use).


Finally, you may not benefit from meds for this because it is circumstantial. You may just be upset (which anyone would) because you are in a major you hate and aren't doing well in classes...anyone would have a depressed mood from that, even if you aren't clinically depressed. Anyway, go back to a counselor and get help figuring out what you really want from life. You would benefit from a life coach also. Feel free to contact me if you need anymore information.

Reply:There is still time left in the semester...try to salvage those two classes the best that you can. You can retake the classes if you do end up failing them. Change your major to something you like better.
