Living without A/C in Florida?

Since lately it's been one thing after another with me, of course the A/C in my condo(which I just replaced last year) is out for almost a week. It blows, but not cool. At this time I can't even afford the service call and I'm trying to "tough it out" and just save myself the extra $60 or more a month on my electric bill that I get hit with once I put the A/C(unlike most others down here, I use it only for the summer then open the windows anyway).I have a ceiling fan, and 2 portable fans I keep running at a night-obviously it's still really hot-but I'm thinking of getting one of those tower fans like Sharper Image sells. Has anyone found they work any better than other standing fans?

The way we used to do it with fans is get some large bowls of water and put them in the freezer, set up a stand in front of the fan and put the solid ice bowl in front of it, it lasts about two hours and if you have two or three you can cool down the house about 10 degrees..we would shut off all areas except where we were at and it was liveable and affordable...also keeping a wet towel on the back of the neck works wonders...take one fan and put it heading out the window to draw the heat out first before you do the icebowls...put more in when you take the ones out, you can get cheap large bowls at several stores...it really works..my gramma taught me this...and in 110 degrees my house was 80 degrees..hope it helps
Reply:I had one a couple years ago, even had a remote. And yes it was quiet and really did work better than a regular fan. But mine only lasted a couple years and it quit on me. I bought a plain fan and I can sure tell the difference. Hope this helps.
Reply:if it hasn't been a year since you had your ac installed it should still be under warranty. Sam's club has a tower fan that is very good I think that it cost $47.
Reply:no air in florida. eww that sucks. i live in SW FL and can't stand no air. props to you for putting up with it. i have a tower fan in my office and it works REALLY good. it was only like 50 dollars too. definetly worth it. good luck!!!
